These consisted of leads and inbound emails the state was receiving. The morning shift was 6-8 hours a day filtering the incoming sales calls and emails to sell PPE gear. However, though many of us want to volunteer and help, the skill set needed to make a difference is not something many people possess.Īs a specially appointed volunteer for the state, I basically worked two shifts a day. As Americans, we are not wired to sit back while our country is on fire. I felt useless at home when it came to doing something about this pandemic. I was asked to volunteer in this quest to find legit PPE gear and I was happy to help. This is a fact many people in my city and state were aware of. Having spent over a decade living in China and doing business at the highest levels I learned the rules of engagement over there. Many states, in their desperate attempts to purchase PPE, fell prey to counterfeit masks, meaning that doctors, nurses and other front-line medical personnel were given protective gear that would increase their chances of getting the virus.Īs someone who has been doing this for three weeks, I will tell you I’ve never been more disappointed in and inspired by human beings at the same time. What was the actual material being used in these fakes? I would reckon it was the cheapest possible fabric that could convince someone they were real. Most of the money spent by these counterfeiters were on the packaging since the most expensive part of the masks are the material. The “N95” masks did not perform and they did not filter at least 95% of airborne particles. They were made by factories that were faking the brand, the product, and the packaging. What is a counterfeit? There are two types.įirst, there were fake N95 masks coming in from China that were the definition of counterfeit. The problem that occurred was the selling of counterfeit masks. I get it…its supply and demand and a free market. Some very smart people took advantage of this and began selling gear especially respirator masks such as the N95s for many times the normal market price. When the Covid-19 pandemic broke out the US was lacking personal protection equipment (PPE) gear across the board. Game of Masks: Why I Volunteered 18 hours a Day for 3 Weeks Sourcing Masks
